Well done to all for coming to make this such a successful educational and friendly Scottish Spine Surgeons meeting 2017. A list of those who registered was on the last newsletter.
A highlight was Lee Breakwell making the trip from Sheffield to update us on the British Spine Registry. We all agreed that those units in Scotland who could were going to include all lumbar degenerative pathway work. We will hold a session about this next year.
Thanks to all the invited presenters who gave practice changing talks. Insite was provided by Patrick Statham during the presentation, “Cauda equina syndrome – the frustrations and potential for improvement”. There was a lot of discussion about the path forward.
The role of technology for “Navigation in Spinal Surgery” of patient anatomy was clearly presented by Jim Walkden. The potential and the barriers to adoption were discussed in detail.
Congratulations to all the paper presenters who represented their teams with distinction. The judges scored on a combination of academic merit and message communication.
Congratulations to Sophie Adams achieving the first prize award for paper 3, “Improving in-patient outcome after idiopathic spine deformity surgery by an Enhanced Recovery Pathway (ERP) and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) philosophy: initial results of helping young people get better more quickly.” Gerry Cousins presenting First prize to Sophie.
